SmartCity is a technology park under development in the eastern boundary of Kalkara. The project was unveiled on 10th September 2007, was estimated to cost more than €275 million and covering an area of 360,000sq mtr. Although the outline planning application was submitted on 29th April 2008, in 2018 plans were amended to accommodate a residential area. Nowadays it also hosts commercial outlets and a dancing water fountain which forms part of the lagoon, a man-made geometric water space. SmartCity occupies the site which previously served as the Ricasoli Industrial Estate which was established back in 1979.
